Comprehensive Physician Practice Study Released
For Immediate Release: June 16, 2003
The Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati has released what it believes to be the most comprehensive information gathered in this area related to physicians, their practices and quality of care. The study was conducted by Cooper Research, a national health care market research firm located in northeast Cincinnati.
We now finally know, beyond anecdotes and stories, what physicians think about their practices, their futures and what is happening in our local health care system. Physicians are a key thread in the fabric that is our system. What they think and how they react is important, said Academy Executive Director Russell Dean.
The survey, sent to some 2,900 physicians during the month of April, had a response rate of nearly 35%, which by survey standards, is quite excellent, according to Dr. Robert Miller, CEO of Cooper Research, Inc.
At the same time the physician survey was being done, approximately 100 area practice administrators responded to a version of the survey seeking input from their perspective as managers of many local practices. This survey had an even higher response rate than the physician survey.
This work clearly presents the views of physicians and their office administrators in the Cincinnati market and gets at many key issues and concerns held by both, said Miller. The physician community is deeply concerned about access to care, quality of care, and the number of doctors who serve the Cincinnati area according to Miller.
Both of the surveys give us statistically valid information about our local physician practices and perhaps, even more importantly, what's in the hearts and minds of our doctors as they try to work within the system and contemplate the future. Our hope is that what we have found will be useful in helping to deal with the issues we now face and will face, to assure the vitality of our medical and health care community, according to Dean.
